I get asked occasionally for social media advice. For example, a friend may ask how to use Linkedin for business, or for job hunting. Other typical scenarios include:

A Marketing Manager from the traditional school of push marketing wants to know how they can use their company's Facebook page more effectively.
An acquaintance with a small care agency feels she 'has to use social media' as all her friends and family tell her so.
A colleague wants to get better at social media to ensure his employability in the PR industry (PRs: Not on Twitter? You won't get a job!)
Of course, there are lots of free and excellent online resources covering digital marketing and social media, but often what's needed most is the practical, hands-on stuff. To be shown something step-by-step, and talking face to face to someone who understands social media inside out. Luckily, if you need a little more hands on advice, help is at hand!
Social Media Surgery
The concept of Social Media Surgery is simple - to bring together an informal network of social media volunteers and businesses / individuals who need help and advice, which is provided for free.
One of their fliers describes the meeting thus:
You will get to sit alongside someone who understands good ways to use the internet and they'll show you useful free tools. If you like what you see they can also help you set up your blog, or Facebook page or Twitter account.
The surgeries are held across the UK (and also abroad) and are run by 'surgeons' - social media volunteers.
